3+2 Respiratory Care, M.S.
The Allied Health Science major’s pre-professional phase provides an exceptional and innovative learning experience, preparing the student for the rigors of the Master of Science in Respiratory Care.
Respiratory Therapy specializes in evaluating, treating, and caring for patients with breathing or cardiopulmonary disorders. They work with patients of all ages, from premature infants with underdeveloped lungs to elderly individuals with chronic respiratory conditions such as asthma, emphysema, or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
Prerequisites
The following prerequisite courses must be completed with a grade of C or better prior to matriculation:
- Chemistry (one course with lab preferred)
- Human anatomy (one course)
- Human physiology (one course)
- Microbiology (one course with lab preferred)
- Physics (one course with lab preferred)
- Psychology (one course)
- Statistics (one course)
Admission Requirements
You must meet the following qualifications to be considered for admission:
- Minimum overall GPA of 2.5 in undergraduate coursework
- Completion of all professional prerequisite required courses with a grade of C or better
- Submission of the GRE graduate school entry exam score is encouraged but not required (from an examination taken within five years of the date of application to the program)
- Personal interview with program faculty
- Completed application to the program and submission of official transcripts for all college coursework completed
During the student’s first three years, they will complete the Allied Health Science major requirements and Carthage’s General Education curriculum. The undergraduate experience will include healthcare-specific opportunities such as Jump Start Experiences, Grand Rounds, and Journal Club. Serving others is at the center of our mission, so community service events are available throughout the year.
Students accepted into the professional phase begin coursework in the fall term of their fourth year at Rush University, College of Health Sciences. This full-time program takes 24 months and a minimum of 92 credits to complete. The student will obtain hands-on experience at Rush University, College of Health Sciences, one of the nation’s top academic medical centers.
At the completion of the program, the student will earn a B.A. in Allied Health Science from Carthage College and a M.S. in Respiratory Care from Rush University, College of Health Sciences.
